Ingredients
For the Steak:
- 1 lb filet mignon or beef tenderloin
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp dried thyme
For the Crostini:
- 1 baguette, thinly sliced
- Olive oil for brushing
For the Horseradish Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp prepared horseradish
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Caramelized Shallots:
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 large shallots, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Season steak with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme. Let rest at room temp for 30 minutes.
2. Make horseradish sauce by combining mayo, horseradish, mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Chill.
3. Start caramelizing shallots: melt butter over medium heat, add shallots and cook until soft.
4. Add balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook until golden and jammy (about 30 mins total).
5. Heat olive oil in a skillet. Cook steak to preferred doneness (4 mins per side for medium-rare). Let rest 5 mins.
6. Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush baguette slices with olive oil and toast for 5–7 minutes until golden.
7. Slice steak thinly against the grain. Spread horseradish sauce on crostini, top with steak and caramelized shallots.
8. Arrange on platter and serve immediately. Garnish with herbs if desired.
Notes
- Make horseradish sauce and caramelized shallots ahead of time to reduce stress.
- Use roasted sweet potato slices instead of bread for a gluten-free option.
- Let the steak rest before and after cooking to keep it juicy.
- Don’t overcook the steak; medium-rare works best for tenderness on crostini.
